Before SumoFiber
In 2003, founder David Burr started nexSIP, an early Asterisk-based VoIP shop in Utah, installing open-source phone systems years before the rest of the market caught up.
Founded in Bountiful, Utah by David Burr, SumoFiber delivers fiber internet on UTOPIA and partner open-access networks — same family-owned operator, now serving thousands of homes and businesses across eight states.
From a small Utah ISP undercutting the incumbents on UTOPIA Fiber to a multi-state operator on open-access networks across the West — SumoFiber’s story is steady growth without losing the local-shop bones.
In 2003, founder David Burr started nexSIP, an early Asterisk-based VoIP shop in Utah, installing open-source phone systems years before the rest of the market caught up.
In 2011, SumoFiber launched in Bountiful, Utah as an internet service provider on the UTOPIA Fiber open-access network — undercutting incumbents by nearly half and proving local fiber could be done right.
In 2012, SumoFiber added a hosted PBX platform and pioneered a managed-router install pattern that became the company’s service signature — the same approach behind today’s business fiber internet and managed Wi-Fi.
In 2018, SumoFiber migrated to a new core platform with deeper redundancy and expanded north into Idaho Falls and Ammon — its first market outside Utah.
Today SumoFiber powers thousands of homes and businesses across Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, California, Illinois, Wisconsin, and South Carolina. Same family-owned operator, longer reach — check availability in your city.
These principles guide everything we do, from network design to the way we answer the phone.
We invest in the latest fiber technology to deliver the fastest speeds and most reliable service available on every open-access network we serve.
Our customers are our neighbors. We're committed to supporting and growing alongside the communities we serve, starting in Utah and reaching outward.
We build networks designed for 99.9% uptime and back them with transparent, honest service you can count on — month after month.
No hidden fees, no surprise charges, no contracts. Just straightforward pricing and plans that make sense for your home or business.
Real people, real solutions. Our Utah-based support team picks up the phone with the expertise and empathy that built our reputation.
Fiber-optic technology is energy-efficient by design. We're committed to building a greener, more sustainable network for the long haul.
SumoFiber is led by the same person who founded it. No private equity, no out-of-state corporate parent — just a Utah operator who answers his own phone.
Founder & President
David started nexSIP in 2003, installing Asterisk-based phone systems back when nobody else would touch open-source VoIP. He sold that customer base in 2009, founded SumoFiber LLC in 2011 on UTOPIA Fiber, and has led the company through every expansion since.

SumoFiber was founded in 2011 by David Burr, who still serves as President. The company launched in Bountiful, Utah as one of the first internet service providers to deliver fiber internet over the UTOPIA Fiber open-access network, and remains headquartered at 505 West 2600 South, Bountiful, UT 84010.
SumoFiber serves residential and business customers in eight states: Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, California, Illinois, Wisconsin, and South Carolina. Coverage is delivered through UTOPIA Fiber and other open-access fiber networks, so availability depends on which open-access network has been built in your specific neighborhood.
SumoFiber is an independent internet service provider that operates on top of the UTOPIA Fiber open-access network. UTOPIA owns and maintains the physical fiber, and SumoFiber provides the internet service, customer support, and billing. SumoFiber has been a UTOPIA service provider since 2011.
SumoFiber is headquartered in Bountiful, Utah, with leadership and customer-care decisions made in-state. The company started in Utah in 2011 and has grown by expanding into adjacent open-access fiber markets — not by being acquired by an out-of-state corporate parent.
